Terpene and physical markers for relative susceptibility of forest tree species to colonization by Heterobasidion spp.

Riassunto: The development of ligno-suberized boundary zone and wound periderm seems to play an important role in the resistance to root-invading fungi in trees and the speed of formation of these barriers may be related to relative host resistance to pathogens. Although terpenoids provide different ecological functions, these metabolites act as primary defensive chemicals against herbivorous and microbial attacks. The aim of the work reported here was to examine the differential physical and chemical responses to the attack of Heterobasidion spp. in forest tree species. Data on variations in the formation of the ligno-suberized boundary zone and differences in constitutive and induced monoterpene profiles in trees showing resistance and susceptibility to Heterobasidion spp. are presented. Discussion is focused on terpenoid mixtures which appear to be more effective in chemical defences and the possibility to use physical traits and terpenes as an aid to characterize less susceptible plants to infection by Heterobasidion spp.
